Everyone else forgot. It was only
an ordinary mistake, not worth
the mouthfuls of cold porridge
he then swallowed all his life.

He greets his wife with sweetness,
takes her arm and treats her like a lady,
explaining how the daffodils
come back again each Spring.

They say pneumonia is the old man’s friend
but he has found another.
The tyranny of memory
has gone and he can breathe.

Toti ceilalti au uitat. A fost doar
o greseala obisnuita, nedemna de
imbucatura de terci rece
pe care l-a mancat mai apoi intreaga-i viata.

Isi intampina sotia cu blandete,
o ia de brat si o trateaza ca pe o doamna,
explicandu-i cum narcisele
se-ntorc in fiecare primvara.

Se spune ca pneumonia este prietena batranilor,
dar el a gasit o alta.
s-a eliberat de tirania memoriei
si poate respira.
