Ralph found his breath and blew a series of short blasts.
Piggy exclaimed: "There's one!"
A child had appeared among the palms, about a hundred yards along the beach. He was a boy of perhaps six years, sturdy and fair, his clothes torn, his face covered with a sticky mess of fruit. His trousers had been lowered for an obvious purpose and had only been pulled back half-way. He jumped off the palm terrace into the sand and his trousers fell about his ankles; he stepped out of them and trotted to the platform. Piggy helped him up. Meanwhile Ralph continued to blow till voices shouted in the forest. The small boy squatted in front of Ralph, looking up brightly and vertically. As he received the reassurance of something purposeful being done he began to look satisfied, and his only clean digit, a pink thumb, slid into his mouth.
Piggy leaned down to him.
"What's yer name?"
"Johnny."

Ralph isi trase sufletul si emise o serie de sunete scurte.
Piggy striga:
- Uite unul!
Un copil aparuse intre palmieri, cam la un kilometru in lungul plajei. Era un baiat de sase ani, poate, voinic si blond, cu hainele sfasiate, cu fata acoperita de o pasta lipicioasa de fructe. Pantalonii lui fusesera lasati in jos cu un scop evident si fusesera trasi inapoi doar pe jumatate. Sari de pe terasa cu palmieri in nisip si pantalonii cazura pana la glezne; iesi din ei si se indrepta grabit spre platforma. Piggy il ajuta sa urce. Intre timp, Ralph continua sa sufle pana ce in padure rasunara voci. Baietelul se ghemui in fata lui Ralph privind in sus optimist si vertical. Odata ce primi asigurarea ca se intampla ceva important incepu sa se arate multumit si singurul sau deget curat, degetul mare de la mana, roz la culoare, ii aluneca in gura.
Piggy se apleca spre el.
- Care ti-i numele?
-Johnny.
