Never Let Me Go - fragments
 

Maybe it was to do with that room, the way the sun came in through the frosted glass so that even in early summer, it felt like autumn light. Or maybe it was because the stray sounds that would occasionally reach us as we lay there were of donors milling about, going about their business around the grounds, and not of students sitting in a grassy field, arguing about novels and poetry. Or maybe it had to do with how sometimes, even after we’d done it really well and were lying in each other’s arms, bits of what we’d just done still drifting through our heads, Tommy would say something like: “I used to be able to do it twice in a row easy. But I can’t any more.” Then that feeling would come right to the fore and I’d have to put my hand over his mouth, whenever he said things like that, just so we could go on lying there in peace. I’m sure Tommy felt it too, because we’d always hold each other very tight after times like that, as though that way we’d manage to keep the feeling away.

Poate avea legatura cu camera, cu felul in care soarele stralucea prin geamul opac, de parca era lumina toamnei chiar si la inceputul verii. Sau poate era din cauza sunetelor disparate care uneori ajungeau pana la noi, provenind de la donatorii care se invarteau de colo-colo in treaba lor, si nu de la elevii asezati pe iarba, dezbatand romane si poezii. Sau poate avea de-a face cu felul in care Tommy, cateodata, cand stateam imbratisati dupa ce fusese totul foarte bine si crampeie din ceea ce tocmai facusem inca ne bantuiau prin cap, zicea ceva de genul: “Inainte eram in stare s-o fac de doua ori la rand fara efort. Dar acum nu mai pot.” Atunci sentimentul acela iesea iarasi la lumina si de cate ori zicea astfel de lucruri trebuia sa-i pun mana la gura ca sa putem continua sa stam acolo linistiti. Sunt sigura ca si Tommy il simtea, pentru ca mereu ne tineam strans in brate dupa astfel de momente, ca si cum asa am fi putut sa tinem sentimentul la distanta.
